Addressing Animal Hoarding in Our Community
As the largest animal shelter south of San Antonio, Palm Valley Animal Society (PVASTX) is uniquely equipped to handle the complex, urgent needs of animal hoarding cases. In 2024 alone, we intervened in 5 separate hoarding situations, rescuing and caring for over 300 animals on top of our average annual intake of 8,000 pets.

What Is Animal Hoarding?
Animal hoarding occurs when individuals acquire more animals than they can properly care for, often leading to overcrowded, unsanitary conditions, untreated medical issues, and severe neglect. Every case is different. Some people have good intentions that spiral out of control, and others unfortunately are more serious. Hoarding is as much a mental-health crisis as it is an animal-welfare crisis—and each case requires careful, compassionate intervention.
How you can help.
None of this work can happen without you. In 2024, your donations of food, bedding, and medical supplies, along with our amazing volunteers, powered our hoarding-response efforts.
Whether you helped transport rescued animals, stocked our clinic shelves, or shared urgent adoption alerts on social media—you were there for every paw step.

Adopt.
Give a furry friend a forever home—and watch them thrive! Our shelter pets are spayed/neutered, microchipped, and ready to become part of your family.

Foster.
Open your heart (and home!) for a few weeks to an animal in transition. Fostering frees up kennel space and helps shy or recovering pets learn to socialize before adoption.

Join our team and help pets blossom, just like these incredible before-and-after makeovers by Max Flores from Pets-A-Like! Whether you’re grooming, walking, socializing, or assisting in enrichment activities, your hands-on support gives animals the confidence they need to thrive and find loving homes.

Donate.
Keep our shelves stocked with food, bedding, and medical supplies. Every gift—large or small—helps PVASTX care for hundreds of animals each day.
